#3 Sew Your Own Dolls by Louise Kelly
The dolls in this book are darling, and fairly large for handmade dolls. These are good dolls for beginners, especially learning how to make the clothes because they all start from the same basic pattern and evolve from there.

#4 Sew Your Own Animal Dolls by Louise Kelly
Louise Kelly wrote another great book featuring felt dolls, this time of the anthropomorphic variety! Inside you'll find a collection of bears, foxes, cats, even a pug girl. And they are all very simple to make.

#5 Handmade Animal Dolls by Melissa Lowry
Speaking of animal dolls, this one is loaded with them. The book itself is written in a way that is helpful to the beginner sewist wishing to evolve his or her skills, with the easiest projects in the front, getting progressively more complicated, to the more difficult patterns towards the end of the book.

#6 My Felt Doll by Shelly Down
I can't recommend this book for beginner sewists highly enough. This is the book that got me started on my doll making journey. In the book, Shelly Down, also known as Gingermelon online, teaches you how to make the basic doll body and hair. From there she gives you a ton of options on how to dress and customize your doll. Not only are the dolls cute, but they make excellent gifts and her directions are written well enough that even someone who has never held a sewing needle in the hand can understand them.
